To look at Karen Rempel a year ago, you’d think she was the queen of Zen. The Vancouver 46-year-old practised yoga, meditated daily and ran at least three times a week. She also avoided jitter-inducing sugar and caffeine. But despite these healthy habits, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was out of control. The combination of long hours at work as a writer, a gruelling commute and volunteer commitments was starting to take its toll.

The world keeps turning we were once told, and boy does it ever. In 2012, the pace of life continues to increase and that precious “down time” that many of us look for doesn’t seem to be anywhere on the horizon.
The advent of the Internet, and the subsequent 24-hour news cycle, has given birth to the Information Age with everything at our fingertips. Digital technology’s spread to the lives of everyday folks means that we sometimes surf the web for hours – watching movies, emailing and gathering information. At the outset of this new era, a decade or two ago, this was enticing. But it’s wearing thin.

Integrated Healthcare Practitioners set out with a mission of bridging the gap between conventionally trained and integrative healthcare providers. Dr Esther Konigsberg, MD is single- handedly delivering major advances towards that mission. With an undergraduate degree from McGill in Psychobiology completed in 1980, Esther went on to receive her medical training (school and residency in family medicine) from McMaster in 1985. By the early 1990s her interest in integrative medicine had peaked and she began expanding her tool bag by pursuing training in a variety of areas outside the domain of conventional medicine.
